The Sacral Chakra in Pregnancy

Swadhistana, the sacral chakra whose element is water.

The power of labour is often described and felt as waves rising, crashing, receding, again and again.

Water reminds us of our ability to adapt. We can be as strong & powerful as the ocean but also as calm and tranquil as a hot bubble bath.

We change & adapt in relation to our environment. These are invaluable assets to remember as we prepare for the unknowns of labour, birth and parenting.

Swadhisthana is the home of creative energy, sensuality, sexuality, pleasure, joy. It also relates to the reproductive organs so in women, the womb, or yoni, which is quite literally the epicentre of humanity.

Pregnancy & birth are the ultimate expression of creativity, and parenting is one long creative event with constant learning, adaptation, imagination, much trial, more error and sometimes glimmers of success!

I love to remind women that the hormones that we produce during labour are the same as we produce when we make love and how birth has the potential to be a hugely sensual experience. Orgasms can also feel like powerful waves.

Our pelvis can be the source of deep pleasure, but also deep pain. From difficult menstruation, sexual trauma, fertility struggles, birth trauma, to conditions such as endometriosis, incontinence, prolapse.

We hold, feel and express a lot of emotional pain in the pelvis. You can imagine how past traumas may play a role in how birth shapes up for some women. I recommend every pregnant woman, with or without pain, receive some specialised body work during pregnancy to help align, release & prepare.
