What is Mindful Birthing?

Mindfulness is a hugely well researched form of meditation and has been shown in hundreds of studies to help with stress, anxiety and improves you outlook and resilience.

The practice involves bringing the mind to things that are happening in the environment (sounds around you for example) or things that are happening inside of you (thoughts, feelings, sensations, breath).

The practice comes from the teachings of the Buddha 2500 years ago, but mindfulness is not a religious practice and is used by people from many different religious beliefs as well as those who do not have any.

It is simply about becoming present with what is here. It helps you to calm your mind which in turn calms your nervous system and improves your outlook on life.

There is a lot of research that shows mindfulness and meditation can be helpful for childbirth preparation too. The following study on Mindful Based Childbirth Education (MBCE) was conducted to find out what techniques would help women suffering with fear of childbirth.

‘MBCE has the potential to empower women to become active participants in the birthing process, thus addressing common concerns regarding lack of control and satisfaction with labour and facilitate peer support into the postnatal period.’

Fisher (et al)

The WHO recommendation backs this up:

“Relaxation techniques, including progressive muscle relaxation, breathing, music, mindfulness and other techniques, are recommended for healthy pregnant women requesting pain relief during labour.”

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
